II. God – B. God the Son

from the Baptist Faith & Message 2000:

Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission. He now dwells in all believers as the living and ever present Lord.

So I notice there is not a lot of response on your personal systematic theology overview, but I will say it has prompted me to look into this confessional statement the doctrines it discusses and I enjoy reading the corresponding scriptures and related articles.

There is a lot that could be said about the way they described God the Son. Much could be said on the necessity of the virgin birth to the gospel, Christ’s life & death & resurrection, his sinlessness, his glorification, his deity, his humanity, his role as mediator, and his imminent return. But there was one statement that up until recently I would have passed over thinking everyone believed it, which I now know is not the case. It is the statement “Christ is the eternal Son of God”.

Since God opened by blind eyes and put life into my dead heart I’ve never once thought Jesus Christ was not God’s son eternally. Though he existed on earth for a short time as the Son of God, I always thought Him to be the Son of God even before his earthly existence. Some believe Christ Sonship began at the incarnation.

Honestly, given the short time I have had to read up on the eternal Sonship of Christ, I am not as educated I would like to be and probably do not have enough information to make a valid argument. There several places online that refer to this doctrine, but one of the most helpful has been an article by John MacArthur, who once believed “incarnational Sonship”, but now ascribes to eternal Sonship. I could go on and summarize what he said, but it’s probably be better to read the article that is articulated better than I could describe it.
