Edwin Charles Dargan served as Professor of Homiletics at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville Ky (1892 to 1907). He then moved to the pastorate of First Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia. In 1917 he became editorial secretary for the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board until 1927. Dargan's other works include "A History of Preaching," "The Changeless Christ and Other Sermons," "An Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans," "The Doctrines of Our Faith," and "The Bible Our Heritage."
Dargan had a high view of scripture, a commitment to the doctrines of grace, and a passion for preaching. The current volume, "The Hope of Glory" was published in 1919. It includes 10 sermons demonstrating a range of subjects and styles. The book does not contain an introduction or any information about the occasion of each sermon. The reader will notice a difference in the lofty style of sermons like The Hope of Glory and Sovereignty in Salvation over against the sermons that seem to have been written to children, like Children at Play and Talitha Cumi!
I found the book in the library of The New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The circulation card in the back indicates that no one has checked the book out for 24 years. I am very please to be able to add this work to my online collection of public domain Southern Baptist writings. I pray that this work will bring glory to God by introducing a new generation to the blessed ministry of E. C. Dargan.
by grace alone,
